What is Hazing?

Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. For more information, please see the link to 51ÁÔÆæ's .

Sororities and Fraternities have been influential in building community, fostering friendships, service, and leadership. To meet the requirements set by the , every California institution of higher learning must report information on the recognized fraternities and sororities organization’s academics, service hours, addresses of the chapter homes, mental health services, sanctioned events and their conduct. This is a mandatory report, but we hope it will highlight the Fraternity and Sorority Life community and their contributions as well as show they are responsible campus community members.

Campus Hazing Transparency Report

In accordance with the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act, the California Stop Campus Hazing Act, and the CSU Hazing Policy, the Campus Hazing Transparency Report aims to provide a summary of all substantiated hazing incidents involving recognized and established student organizations that have been investigated and adjudicated through formal university proceedings.This report is designed to promote transparency, accountability, and student safety, and it is updated biannually.

  • Pursuant to the California Stop Campus Hazing Act (CA Education Code 66309), there were no reportable violations of University Policy related to hazing that were affiliated with a conference-based competitive program or recognized sorority or fraternity.

    2025 Annual Security Report

  • Pursuant to the California Stop Campus Hazing Act (CA Education Code 66309), there was 1 violation of University Policy related to hazing that were affiliated with a conference-based competitive program or recognized sorority or fraternity. 

     

    Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity

    Recognition Status: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation: The allegation stated that Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity was engaging in the hazing of their pledges, including behavior named: use of alcohol and drugs, theft of property from UC Davisdemeaning and verbally abusive language toward candidates, and sexual harassment of female party goers.  

    Did the violation include the abuse of illegal use of alcohol? Yes     

    Did the violation include the abuse of illegal use of drugs? No

    Sanctions placed on the Organization: Chapter placed on probation until the completion of requirements and end of Fall 2026 semester with the the university.

    Findings of the Institution: Found responsible for violating the following Standards for Student Conduct. 

    (7) Conduct that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person within or related to the University community, including physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, or sexual misconduct.  

    (8) Hazing, or conspiracy to haze. Hazing is defined as any method of initiation or pre-initiation into a student organization or student body, whether or not the organization or body is officially recognized by an educational institution, which is likely to cause serious bodily injury to any former, current, or prospective student of any school, community college, college, university or other educational institution in this state (Penal Code 245.6), and in addition, any act likely to cause physical harm, personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm, to any former, current, or prospective student of any school, community college, college, university or other educational institution. The term "hazing" does not include customary athletic events or school sanctioned events. Neither the express or implied consent of a victim of hazing, nor the lack of active participation in a particular hazing incident is a defense. Apathy or acquiescence in the presence of hazing is not a neutral act and is also a violation of this section.  

    (10) Use, possession, manufacture, or distribution of alcoholic beverages (except as expressly permitted by law and University regulations), or public intoxication while on campus or at a University related activity. 

    (18) Any act chargeable as a violation of a federal, state, or local law that poses a substantial threat to the safety or well-being of members of the University community, to property within the University community, or poses a significant threat of disruption or interference with University operations.
