The Opportunities for Scholarship, Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR), previously known as the Center for Student Research Scholar's Program, was founded by Dr. Jason Singley (Department of Physics) in 2012 and consisted of 28 Scholars. Dr. Singley also served as the OSCAR's Director from 2012–2014. From 2014–2016, the OSCAR experienced much growth in funding opportunities and programming under the Directorship of Dr. Jeffery Seitz (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences). Dr. Jenny O (Department of Kinesiology) served as OSCAR's Director from 2017–2023. From 2024–2026 Dr. Jennifer Sherwood (Department of Kinesiology) served as the OSCAR's Director. Since 2026, Divya Sitaraman (Department of Psychology) has served as the OSCAR's Director. Under her leadership, OSCAR has expanded its programming with a focus on academic, research, and professional development while continuing to pursue external funding opportunities to support its Scholars.
Over the years, the number of OSCAR Scholars has increased significantly. In 2024–2025, the OSCAR supported 152 Scholars, with all CSUEB Colleges and many academic majors represented. Our Scholars are also representative of our CSUEB student body; reflecting great diversity in race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational experiences. We look forward to continued growth in the coming years!
