Getting started checklist

Work through these steps in order during your first week:

  1. Activate your NetID and check your Horizon email - both required for university communications.
  2. Log in to Canvas at horizon.csueastbay.edu using your NetID. Your courses appear here once enrolled.
  3. Review your syllabus for each class - note key dates, attendance expectations, and how to reach your instructor.
  4. Verify your tech - laptop or desktop computer, current browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari), reliable internet, webcam and microphone for Zoom.
  5. Walk through Canvas features - modules, assignments, discussions, gradebook.
  6. Bookmark the help line - 1-866-325-0853 for 24/7 Canvas support.

Canvas and technology

Recommended technology: laptop or desktop computer (not just a phone), current browser, webcam and microphone for Zoom, reliable internet (cable, fiber, or solid mobile broadband).

Tips for online success

Online courses cover the same material as on-campus - flexibility doesn't mean less work. Plan for 12 to 15 hours per 3-unit course per week.

Time management

  • Block specific hours each week for each course - protect them like in-person class times.
  • Use a calendar or task tracker to capture every deadline.
  • Build in slack for unexpected interruptions; don't pack the schedule wall-to-wall.

Communication

  • Use Canvas Inbox to message your instructor; expect 24-48 hour response on weekdays.
  • Attend virtual office hours - they're usually empty and you'll get focused help.
  • Keep your tone professional. Online communication carries less context, so clarity matters more.

Study strategies

  • Take active notes - paraphrase the material, don't just highlight.
  • Teach the material back to yourself or a study partner.
  • Work in focused 50-minute blocks with short breaks. Two focused hours beats four distracted ones.
